A person who has an interest in architecture should also know the history of
buildings and how these buildings were constructed. Thus, this person must also
know how and why the ancient Egyptian pyramids were created.
The need
for shelter is vital. Other human needs emerged: the need for gathering and
communing with the public, the need for worship, the need for recreation, and
the need to create places or work, and the need for burying the departed.
The ancient Egyptians buried their dead in tombs along with their
earthly belongings to bring to the afterlife. Before the pyramids, they built
the mastabas. Then they developed the pyramid鈥檚 direct predecessor: the stepped
pyramid. Then finally, the great ancient Egyptian pyramids were constructed, the
pyramids of the Pharaohs Cheops, Chepren, and Mykerinus.
Scholars
suggested that aliens helped in the construction of the pyramids. Another theory
that existed was that giants built the pyramids with the help of tens of
thousands of slaves. However, the most likely scenario was that the Pharaoh
employed about 100,000 men. Building time likely occurred during the months of
heavy inundation: October, September, August, and July.
A pyramid has a
square base with its corners facing the cardinal points of the compass (North,
South, East, and West). Its basic shape resembles a mountain. Thus, to create
that idea, pyramids were designed by drawing lines starting from the corners.
Using 52 degree angles, the lines were drawn upward until the four points
converge at a peak.
The ancient Egyptian pyramids had spaces like the
grand gallery, queen鈥檚 chamber, and false tomb chamber. The rest of the spaces
are the passageways, tunnels, and airshafts. To keep the massive stones from
caving in, the stones were arranged in which the stone on top of one stone
projected by a certain distance, like creating reversed stairs.
The
trickiest part in making the pyramids was moving the massive rectangular blocks.
It was widely known that ramps were used for this purpose. The workers mounted
the stones on wheels, tied them, and were being pulled by several of the
workers. They traveled along spiral ramps until the stones were in
place.
Another theory is that the ramps were coated with Tafla clay,
which is slippery feel and could have allowed the stones to be mobilized easily
and effortlessly without the use of rollers.
Building a full-scale
Egyptian pyramid nowadays, and using ancient technology, is impractical.
However, one can derive a further understanding of making pyramids through the
use of modeling clay. The design of the ancient Egyptian pyramids is timeless.
Thus the pyramid design is used as the main structure or ornamental structure in
museums in France and casinos in Las Vegas.
