The idea of immortality, of youth everlasting, is among the most prevalent of
concepts in modern culture. It has become such a prominent pursuit that an
entire niche within the medical industry is dedicated to finding ways to create
a proverbial "fountain of youth." For now, science has yet to find a clear
medical product with the same properties as the mythical fountain, but there are
ways to at least help stave off the signs of the aging process.
When
reality bites, however, science or probably alchemy still has a long way to go
before it can treat us with such miraculous brew. So for now, we settle for that
other Shangri-La which can be found in medical spas.
However, just what
are these facilities and why have they suddenly sprouted all over the country,
like some sort of invading plant?
In essence, a medical spa is a
combination of medical clinic and day spa. This is complete with a medical
license and professional doctors and medical personnel - a requirement for some
of the offerings that these facilities have., Apart from the more typical spa
treatments is that these offer cosmetic surgery as well, with liposuction,
hydration therapy, abdominoplasty and other procedures being part of the common
medical spa's repertoire.
The difference between these spas and medical
centers is that the former has a more soothing and relaxing ambience as oppose
to the latter, which is like a hospital with clinical hallways and sterile odor.
Medical spas provide a wellness menu that include special treatments and
therapies like hydration and HGC consultation.
A bigger differentiator
would be the fact that medical spas have licensed doctors on staff. Each of the
medical procedures on offer is supervised or conducted by an appropriate medical
professional, alongside a team with similarly appropriate training and
credentials. These can cover nurses, medical technicians, anesthesiologists and
more.
At present, the standard for medical spas is still unregulated and
is instead being handled by individual states. Because of this, there is still
uncertainty over who is credible enough to do these medical procedures and what
licenses are needed.
For examples, there are certain states which allows
technicians to perform laser and light treatments even if they don't have
medical training. Throughout the country, it is also a common practice for some
medical spas to hire non-med technicians for everything from Botox to laser
liposuction.
On top of these concerns, the law is also unclear on which
treatments should be performed only by medical professionals and which ones can
be handled by those without medical training. As such, most customers are
advised to first check if the spa in question has staff that have the
appropriate training and credentials for the procedures they have on
offer.
Because of these ambiguous regulations, the authorities are
finding it hard to define which procedures are legal and safe and which ones are
not.
In the end, although medical spas can be an adequate alternative
for medical center, it is still important to do your research regarding the
competence of the medical team, particularly those who supervised the surgeries
themselves. Because just like with all matters of health, it is definitely
better safe than sorry.
